Protection Zone

We applaud the courageous action Mayor O’Connor and the City Council took adopting the Resource Protection Overlay Zone. Extending the coastal ordinance citywide acts as a milestone in preserving the unique landforms of our beautiful city. We hope the overlay zone will create a model for other cities to emulate.

Although we share Councilman Struiksma’s concern of assuring passive parkland throughout the community, we see absolutely no direct relationship between the resource protection amendment and park development--and clearly no affect on future park development. According to the parks department, there are no parks planned in areas affected by the zone over the next 18 months, and rarely, if ever, will the city build parks in flood plains and flood ways. The two issues are not related.

The Sierra Club believes citywide resource protection is nothing less than bold action on behalf of the City Council, and we commend their timely action.
