The title headings for Ronald Brownstein’s excellent biographical sketch of Stanley K. Sheinbaum suggest a most unfair picture to the casual reader. To portray him as “The Man Who Would Be Kingmaker” or “Former Chieftain of the Malibu Mafia” belies the story and the innate modesty, morality and commitment to goodness of Sheinbaum, one of the--if not the--

foremost civil libertarians in the nation.
