In the Market

“Tricks of the Trade” (by Fred Powledge, June 28) was very interesting. I became aware of several thoughts rising up as I read about the all-too-credible manipulation that is part of weekly grocery shopping. The first was, “No wonder I never buy anything located at the end of the aisle. I must know unconsciously that I’m being manipulated and categorically resist it.” Another was, “That’s why I’m so irritated by all the junk and the junk food--it’s all where I would like my needed items to be.”

I wonder what would happen to a store that established itself on the basis of efficiency. I wonder if other businesses suffer as a result of resentment built up in people because they’re tired of being manipulated out of their time and money.
