The Israeli government, hoping to avert another nationwide strike, offered to negotiate a five-day workweek with the national labor union in place of wage boosts. The Cabinet decided during its weekly meeting to allow Finance Minister Moshe Nissim to consider the reduced workweek in negotiations if productivity were not affected. Some 450,000 members of the powerful Histadrut labor union staged a 24-hour strike two weeks ago.
