In the wake of the opening Friday of “La Bamba,” Monday was proclaimed Ritchie Valens Day in Los Angeles. The proclamation was presented by Mayor Tom Bradley in afternoon ceremonies at Pacoima Junior High School, where--in front of 3,000 students, faculty, fans, friends and relatives of the late rock star--the school was renamed Valens Junior High School for the day. On hand were Lou Diamond Phillips, who plays Valens in the film, and Donna Coots, the girl of Valens’ dreams who inspired the rock classic “Donna.”
