At least two people, a man and a 6-year-old girl, were killed and 100 demonstrators were reported arrested during a 24-hour general strike demanding a boost in the minimum wage in the Dominican Republic. Businesses were shut down in the poorer neighborhoods of the capital of Santo Domingo, where demonstrators burned tires, barricaded streets, threw rocks and, in some cases, witnesses said, fired at police. Labor unions called the strike to pressure the government into raising the monthly minimum wage to $114 from $70.
