The World : Landslide Buries 2 Villages
A massive landslide swept into a flood-devastated Alpine valley north of Milan, Italy, and buried two mostly evacuated villages, killing one person and leaving 24 missing, authorities said. Six people were hospitalized. The landslide, described as being a mile wide and almost 200 feet high, left a swath of dirt and rock in the Valtellina Valley and dammed up the Adda River, where a lake began to form behind the wall of debris. The landslide damaged the villages of Aquilone and San Polo and wiped out the evacuated villages of Sant’Antonio Morignone and Morignone. It came 10 days after floods killed at least 15 in the area.
