Telephone service to unlicensed contractors who unlawfully advertise in phone directories must be cut off when state regulators notify phone companies, the California Public Utilities Commission ruled. Only contractors examined and certified by the State Contractor’s License Board are entitled to advertise as building contractors, the commission noted. The board issues 1,500 to 2,000 orders a year to unlicensed builders to cease advertising themselves as contractors and to terminate the phone service listed in the unlawful ads.
