Man Gets 1 Year in Police Assault
A Logan Heights man was sentenced Thursday to a year in jail for assaulting a San Diego police officer who then shot him.
George Balboa, who has already spent a year in jail, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a March 23, 1986, incident with Officer Stephen Williamson.
Balboa was allegedly under the influence of PCP at the time of the incident. He grabbed a small chrome bar fixture on Williamson’s patrol car and assaulted the officer with it.
Williamson shot Balboa in the abdomen and elbow.
Balboa’s attorney, Deborah Carson, said Williamson has since retired on a stress disability claim. The incident was his third shooting of a person in five years.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Wayne Peterson denied probation for Balboa and he gave him credit for the time he has already spent in jail.
Balboa has since sued the City of San Diego for false arrest. That suit is pending.
