The Nation : Withering Heat Persists

Share

A heat wave blamed for at least 65 deaths in the last 11 days kept its stranglehold on the Midwest with temperatures in the 90s and health officials warned that the elderly were most at risk. Clashing hot and cool air masses over Upstate New York triggered a tornado that raced down the New York Thruway, flipping over cars and trucks and slamming into a restaurant, where diners saw the twister coming and fled to safety in a basement, police said. The twister struck the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga at 4:30 p.m., uprooting trees, collapsing roofs and breaking windows but apparently causing no injuries.
