Parmenter Advances Into Third Round of Pro Surfing

Dave Parmenter of Huntington Beach moved into the third round of the $42,000 Stubbies Pro surfing contest Friday at Oceanside Pier.

Parmenter defeated Mitch Thorson of Margaret River, Australia, in the second round. Parmenter will face Barton Lynch of Manly, Australia, the Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP) points leader.

Bud Llamas of Huntington Beach lost to Gary Elkerton of Mooloolabah, Australia, in his second-round heat.

Despite getting few rides because of the small waves, last season’s world champion, Tom Curren of Santa Barbara, defeated Todd Martin of Cardiff, Calif.

The men’s third round of 16 surfers begins at 9 a.m. today.

In the women’s Michelob Cup competition, three Orange County surfers advanced to the quarterfinals.

Sisters Jorja and Jolene Smith of San Clemente won their second-round heats. Jorja Smith beat Lisa Anderson and will face Wendy Botha of Durban, South Africa, today. Jolene Smith surfs against three-time world champion Freida Zamba of Flagler Beach, Fla. Jolene defeated Alisa Schwartzstein of Laguna Beach.

Tricia Gill of Newport Beach beat Toni Sawyer in the second round. Gill will surf against Pam Burridge from Sydney, Australia, today.

The women’s competition begins at 7 a.m. today.
