The Electronic Office

Congratulations on the well-informed and timely article by Bob Sipchen (“Seven Ways to Survive the Electronic Office,” July 21).

Of particular interest was the section dealing with the many problems emerging from peering at VDTs. Impressed by the extraordinary achievement that the personal computer represents, both in itself and in what it can do, we users far too readily ignore the evidence of out senses, that what comes through the screen leaves a great deal to be desired.

Whatever the “experts” say, the long-term effects of working with VDTs will be known only in the long term. For those of us who have been converted to their use in mid of later life, the adverse consequences might be trivial, but, today’s children are facing a lifetime’s addiction. For this reason alone, if there is any doubt at all, we should protect our children by using whatever exists which eliminates electromagnetic radiation, reduces glare and eliminates the static build-up of charged dust particles.
