A 53-year-old man said to be the second-longest surviving heart transplant patient has died after nearly 16 years with his transplanted heart. Richard W. Mueller died at his home in suburban Greenfield, Mich., of a heart-related illness. Mueller received his new heart Nov. 8, 1971, in an operation performed at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif., by heart surgeon Norman E. Shumway. A spokesman for the medical center said records showed him to be the second-longest surviving heart transplant recipient.
