The Sullivan Principles

The Sullivan principles call for U.S. companies doing business in South Africa to:

Ensure non-segregation of the races in all work facilities.

Implement equal and fair employment practices for all workers.

Develop training programs that will prepare nonwhites for supervisory, administrative, clerical and technical jobs.

Increase the number of nonwhites in management and supervisory positions.

Improve the quality of employees’ lives outside the work environment in such areas as schooling, recreation and health facilities.

Use influence to support the unrestricted rights of black firms to locate in urban areas.

Influence other firms in South Africa to adhere to the standards of equal rights principles.

Support the freedom of mobility of black workers to seek employment opportunities wherever they exist and make possible provisions for adequate housing for families of employees near the workers’ employment.

Work to eliminate laws and customs that impede social and political justice.

Support the ending of all apartheid laws.

Practice corporate civil disobedience against all apartheid laws and refrain from following the practice, policies and regulations pertaining to apartheid.

Use financial and legal resources to assist blacks in the use of all public and private areas near the plants.
