Soviets Send Supplies to Mir Space Station

The Soviet Union launched an automatic cargo spacecraft Tuesday to carry supplies to two cosmonauts aboard the orbiting Mir space station, the official Tass news agency said.

It said the Progress 31 cargo spacecraft was launched early Tuesday and that the the on-board systems were functioning normally.

The Mir, which has six docking ports, was launched in February, 1986, and is manned by cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Alexander Alexandrov.
