SLAUGHTER REDUCES U.S. DAIRY HERD TO 120--YEAR LOW

WASHINGTON —
The federal government’s $1.8--billion dairy herd buyout program, under which 1.5 million cows are being slaughtered to cut milk production, has slashed the nation’s dairy herd to its smallest size since records were first kept 120 years ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.
For all of 1987, milk production is expected to be down 1 billion to 3 billion pounds from last year’s record of 144.1 billion pounds, the USDA said.
