A former economics student, said to be the fourth-highest leader in the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrilla organization, has been captured, Peru’s Interior Ministry announced. Freddy Rea, 27, a Lima native, has been accused of being the chieftain in an area where some of the most intense fighting has occurred since the organization launched a bloody insurgency in 1980. Police say he recently killed five people in attacks on two police posts. An Interior Ministry spokesman said that Rea and three other rebels were captured in Cuzco, in the Andes 360 miles south of Lima.
