South Korea’s two leading opposition politicians pledged unity in presidential elections expected later this year. Kim Dae Jung, the nation’s best-known dissident, reaffirmed plans to join the main opposition party headed by his chief rival, Kim Young Sam, but the two failed to agree on who should run for president. Kim Dae Jung said he will join the opposition Reunification Democratic Party today, and the two Kims said they will decide later which one will challenge ruling party leader Roh Tae Woo for the right to succeed Chun Doo Hwan, who has promised to step down next February.
