4 Soviet Antarctic Explorers Feared Dead
Four Soviet Antarctic explorers traveling in a Land Rover disappeared during a sudden blizzard recently and are now presumed dead, the Communist Party daily newspaper Pravda said Thursday.
The newspaper said the four were stationed at the Molodyozhnaya Antarctic research station--the main Soviet meteorological base on the continent. The average winter temperature there is about 70 degrees below zero.
Pravda said the four explorers left their base and apparently tried to return in bad weather, violating safety regulations and some of the basic laws of survival in the frozen Antarctic.
