U.N. Still Awaits Iran’s Response on Truce
Iran has not replied to the U.N. Security Council’s demand for an immediate cease-fire in its war with Iraq, Iran’s delegate said Friday.
Ambassador Said Rajaie-Khorassani told reporters that Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar called him in Friday to ask “just one question”--the nature of Iran’s response.
The ambassador said he informed the secretary general that the Iranian government had given him no instructions on the subject. He declined to answer further questions.
The council unanimously approved a resolution on July 20 that directed both Iran and Iraq to lay down their arms. Iraq replied that it would comply if the other side did so.
