Alpha Micro Suit Alleges Copying of Operating System

Alpha Microsystems Inc., a Santa Ana computer maker, said it has filed suit against a New Jersey company alleging copyright infringement.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleges that d/SOFT Ltd. of Teaneck has copied Alpha Micro’s proprietary “AMOS” computer operating system. Alpha Micro has asked for a restraining order barring d/SOFT from using the operating system and seeks compensation for damages and attorneys’ fees.

The company described the suit as “necessary to protect the enormous amounts of time, effort and money Alpha Micro has invested to develop, improve and enhance AMOS.”

Alpha Micro’s operating system, the instructions of which dictate how its computers actually collect and process data, is well regarded for general business use and has attracted a following, particularly in the health industry.

Representatives of d/SOFT could not be reached for comment on the suit. Alpha Micro executives could not be reached for more information.
