The Nation : Fugitive Dies in Shoot-Out
Two inmates took a woman hostage in her car after they escaped from a Mississippi county jail and led police on a three-state chase until a shoot-out in Osecola, Ark., left one dead and the other wounded. The woman, Frances Rowan, 52, of Senatobia, Miss., grabbed the steering wheel of her commandeered car and swerved in a successful attempt to alert others to her plight. A driver of another car notified police and Rowan was rescued unharmed, Arkansas State Police said. The escapee killed in the shoot-out was David Lynn Bainer, 30, Mississippi officials said. He had been held in the Tate County Jail in Senatobia on rape and kidnaping charges. His cell mate, Christopher James Carbin, 24, was wounded during the shoot-out.
