The trial of Mordechai Vanunu, an Israeli nuclear technician accused of espionage and treason for allegedly selling secrets to The Sunday Times of London, will begin Aug. 30 in Jerusalem, according to Israel radio and reports in several Israeli newspapers. Vanunu is accused of revealing to the newspaper that Israel has secretly stockpiled between 100 and 200 atom bombs over the past 20 years, making it the world’s sixth-largest nuclear arsenal. He worked as a technician at Israel’s top secret nuclear facility in the Negev Desert for 10 years until he was laid off in 1985. If convicted, Vanunu could face 55 years in prison.
