More than 300,000 people have fled Athens for island and mountain resorts to escape a new midsummer heat wave forecast to hit Greece in the next two days, police said Saturday.

A sweltering 10-day heat wave killed more than 1,000 people in July in what the Greek press described as a national tragedy.

The weather service predicted that temperatures would reach 108 degrees today and on Monday but begin to cool on Tuesday.

Municipal authorities in and around Athens have set up special centers with air conditioning which the public can use around the clock.

Television and radio have been carrying regular heat wave warnings and hospital sources said hundreds of people with heart and respiratory problems had entered hospitals as a precaution.
