Poisonous Jellyfish Plague China Resort

Jellyfish have infested the waters off the popular seaside resort of Beidaihe, vacation place of the Chinese leadership, killing one person and injuring 1,500, the press reported last week.

On July 29 alone, 166 swimmers were taken to the emergency room of the Beidaihe People’s Hospital suffering from allergic reaction to jellyfish stings, China Daily reported Friday.

A 25-year-old woman died two hours after she was admitted. Between July 29 and Aug. 4, 1,539 people were stung, China Daily said.

Each summer about 3 million people, including members of China’s ruling Politburo, visit the resort about 200 miles east of Beijing. Top leader Deng Xiaoping said recently he likes to swim in the sea at Beidaihe during the summer.
