Rep. John D. Dingell (D-Mich.) underwent successful surgery today at Georgetown University Hospital to replace his left hip, which suffered damage stemming from an old skiing injury.

Dingell, 61, the tough, no-nonsense chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, was expected to be hospitalized for 10 days to two weeks. His aides said Dingell would be back at work when Congress returns Sept. 9 from its summer recess.
