Levco Approves Acquisition by Scientific Micro

San Diego Levco Corp., a closely held manufacturer of accessories for Apple Macintosh personal computers, has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by Scientific Micro Systems Inc., a publicly held computer peripherals company based in Mountain View.

Terms of the acquistion, which involves an exchange of stock, were not announced. San Diego Levco posted revenues of $3 million in 1986, its second year of existence, and now employs 23. The company was founded by Curt Johnson, Duane Maxwell, Doug Gilbert and Stanislaw Lewak. The company makes hardware products that accelerate speed and increase memory of Macintosh computers.

Scientific Micro Systems, which posted $65 million revenues its last fiscal year, makes varied disk-drive components, including controllers and network systems.

San Diego Levco president Roger Phillips said his company, which he described as basically an engineering company, saw the acquisition as attractive because of SMS’s marketing and distribution capabilities.
