SEOUL, South Korea — About 3,000 demonstrators demanding the release of political prisoners kicked and swung sticks at police today in one of the worst riots in South Korea’s capital in more than a month.
The violence erupted as strikes and continuing labor protests shut down four of the nation’s five auto makers and threatened to cripple other key industries. About 1,500 riot-equipped police fired about 100 tear-gas canisters to disperse the demonstrators after a three-hour confrontation near Myondong Cathedral in downtown Seoul.
