3,000 Attack Police in Seoul

United Press International

About 3,000 demonstrators demanding the release of political prisoners kicked and swung sticks at police today in one of the worst riots in South Korea’s capital in more than a month.

The violence erupted as strikes and continuing labor protests shut down four of the nation’s five auto makers and threatened to cripple other key industries. About 1,500 riot-equipped police fired about 100 tear-gas canisters to disperse the demonstrators after a three-hour confrontation near Myondong Cathedral in downtown Seoul.
