UC Irvine’s School of Engineering has been given a $250,000 grant for its new program in biochemical engineering, the university announced.

The new program, which will begin offering courses for graduate students at UCI this fall, “emphasizes research in biological and chemical engineering that has practical applications such as the creation of drugs and growth hormones, treatment of cancer and diagnosis of diseases,” university spokeswoman Cynthia Morris said.

The program will be headed by Henry Lim, formerly of Purdue University in Indiana. Lim, who also will teach and conduct research, is a specialist in bioreactors, kinetics and recombinant cell reactors.
