Isn’t It Time to Pass on Buckner’s Error?
The monthly media gang rips of Bill Buckner continue, vis-a-vis the ’86 World Series. These recycled stories on Buckner’s Game 6 error feature all the imagination of a telephone busy signal.
Our historical perspective of this World Series should not be through the eye of a needle, i.e., blame Billy Buck. A 13-5 underdog (Red Sox) came within an out of winning. Looking for someone to blame? An angle? Seems Sox pitcher Al Nipper made some boo-boos in Game 4. Oil Can Boyd? A disappointment in Game 3.
And, with one out to go, who gave up a single to Gary Carter? Then one to Kevin Mitchell? Then Ray Knight? Who put the tying and winning runs on base? Calvin Schiraldi, that’s who!
