Arlene, the season’s first tropical storm, was expected to weaken slowly as it drifts into the open Atlantic southeast of Bermuda, hurricane forecasters said. At 10:30 p.m. EDT, Arlene was centered about 475 miles southeast of Bermuda. It was moving southeasterly at 5 m.p.h., the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. The storm’s maximum sustained winds remained at near 45 m.p.h. It became a tropical storm Tuesday when its maximum sustained winds reached 39 m.p.h.
