Brita Baldus of East Germany led first-day qualifiers for the women’s springboard diving of the European swimming championships at Strasbourg, France.

Baldus, 22, who won the gold medal in 1983 in Rome, but lost the title in 1985 at Sofia, Bulgaria, had a total of 500.10 points. Heidemarie Grecka of Czechoslovakia, who won the bronze medal in 1985, was second with 486.72. Daphne Jongejans of Holland was third at 464.25.

In water polo, Yugoslavia beat Hungary, 9-7, and France defeated Greece, 12-6.

In women’s water polo, Holland began its defense of the European title with a 22-2 rout of Belgium, France beat Norway, 10-8, and Hungary defeated West Germany, 16-5.
