Thousands of black miners decided today to forfeit their jobs and go home rather than break a national miners strike, union officials said.

Anglo American Corp., the nation’s biggest gold producer, had given 2,000 to 3,000 striking miners until today to return to work at the No. 6 shaft of its Vaal Reefs gold mine or the low-profit shaft would be shut down. Anglo later extended the deadline until tonight, but union spokesman Marcel Golding said, “The workers have decided to go home.”
