Many Rodeos Part of Festivals Offering Concerts, Other Attractions

‘There was never a hoss that couldn’t be rode and never a rider that couldn’t be throwed.” The saying is a very old one, but the rodeo performers of 1987 will tell you it’s still the Truth, with a capital T.

Hundreds of these rough-and-tumble philosophers will be bucking across Southern California in the next few months, to the delight of rodeo fans.

So if you’re hankering for a look at how the West really was won, put on your boots and Stetson, pardner, and mosey on down to the arenas where cowboys and cowgirls will be trying to rope in some prize money.

Agoura Hills’ Pony Express Days Rodeo, Sept. 12 and 13 at 2 p.m.; $6. At Kanan Road and Agoura Road in Agoura; (818) 706-2660. Bishop 55th Wild West Rodeo Weekend, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assn. (PRCA) Rodeo at 8 p.m. Sept. 5; Junior Rodeo at 1 p.m. Sept. 6; PRCA Rodeo at 8 p.m. Sept. 6; Local Rodeo at 1 p.m. Sept. 7. Delhaven Community Foundation Charity ProRodeo and Auction, Oct. 17 and 18 at 1:30 p.m. Adults $6, children $3. Two-day tickets: adults $10, children $5. At 16200 Temple Ave., City of Industry; (818) 964-1844. The arena is part of a newly renovated 300-acre equestrian center in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley. There will also be a charity auction at 6 p.m. Oct. 17.

Poway Rodeo, Oct. 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Adults $5 and $6; children $3 in advance, $4 at the gate. Jim Shoulders’ Poway Rodeo is one of the oldest in San Diego County and is the highlight of Poway Pow Wow Days Sept. 19 to Oct. 4. Other Pow Wow Days events include a barbecue at 6 p.m. Sept. 19, a chili cook-off at 11 a.m. Sept. 26 and a parade at 9 a.m. Oct. 3. Proceeds from all events benefit Poway youth activities and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of San Diego County.

Oceanside Rodeo, Saturday and Sunday at noon; adults $7, children $4. At the San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall; (619) 940-9517. Retired rodeo champion Casey Tibbs will be among celebrity guests at the fifth annual Oceanside event, which benefits the Boys and Girls clubs in the area. Promoters say the rodeo is the largest in San Diego County.

Triangle T Rodeo at Farmers Fair, Oct. 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m.; $4 fair entry, $5 rodeo entry. At Lake Perris Fairgrounds in Lake Perris; (714) 658-2185. Includes livestock exhibition, commercial exhibits and carnival concessions. The Coors Belgian Hitch, a team of draft horses, will be on hand.

Twentynine Palms Pioneer Days PRCA Rodeo, Oct. 17 and 18 at 2 p.m. Adults $6; children 12 years and younger $3. At the Utah Trails Fairgrounds; (619) 367-3445. Pioneer Days fun begins at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 with an outhouse race and continues weekends until Oct. 18. Children’s Day activities, starting at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 in Luckie Park, will include a coloring contest, a dog show and games. Other events of Pioneer Days: an arm-wrestling contest at 9 a.m. Oct. 11; a truck pull at 7 p.m. Oct. 16; a parade at 10 a.m. Oct. 17. Twentynine Palms has been observing Pioneer Days for 51 years.
