Arlene gained force with winds up to 75 m.p.h. over the open Atlantic, becoming the season’s first hurricane, as Tropical Storm Bret moved westward over the high seas. Neither storm posed an immediate threat to land, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. By late afternoon, Arlene was centered about 700 miles southwest of the Azores, forecasters said. Bret was centered about 1,100 miles west of Sao Tiago in the Cape Verde Islands, at least 2,500 miles from Florida. Bret was moving west at 17 m.p.h. and was expected to continue in that direction.
