The International Court of Justice confirmed Thursday that Nicaragua has formally dropped its case against Costa Rica on armed cross-border violations, a court official said.

Nicaragua started proceedings in July of last year citing regular and increasing attacks by U.S.-backed contras based in Costa Rica.

Last month, after peace talks in Central America, Nicaragua wrote to the International Court of Justice withdrawing the complaint and asking it to “take the necessary steps to implement the request.”

Costa Rica had been informed and had raised no objections, the court official said.
