Bill Springman, an assistant baseball coach at Rancho Santiago College, coached the Harwich Mariners to the championship of the Cape Cod summer league. The Mariners finished the season, which ended Aug. 13, with a 30-17 record.

Springman, who was an assistant coach for Harwich last season, was voted the manager of the year, and he is the only first-year manager to have won the award.

Bobby Hamelin, who graduated from Irvine High School in 1986 and played at UCLA last year, was the only Orange County player on the team. Hamelin led the league, composed of college players, with 11 home runs and hit .330.

“It was a great honor to get the award,” said Springman, who coaches the infielders and serves as hitting instructor at Rancho Santiago. “There is a lot of competition in the league, and some of the best college players in the country were there.”
