Pros and Cons on Bilingual Education

Share

There they go again! That dreadful band of Los Angeles school teachers has dared to register their opposition to bilingual education (Part I, Aug. 13) as it is now taught. Imagine the sheer audacity to disapprove of the machinations of the bilingual theorists and their school board supporters!

Come on teachers, shut up and do your duty! Of course, you will be coerced into learning flawless Spanish (and it must be flawless!). And, of course, you will be punished if you do not. Naturally, you will be expected to do double preparations and lesson planning (English and Spanish) in all subject areas for which you will not be paid. You will, however, receive a hefty $2,000 per annum if you are good, pass all your qualifying tests and conduct classes after school all week long. But be careful! Keep your bilingual rosters and records in top order. Who knows when the notorious “compliance team” will swoop down on your school?

If these dissident teachers could only come to their senses and submit.
