College Admissions

Regarding “When Being Best Isn’t Good Enough,” by Linda Mathews, July 19: The subjective nature of the current system of admissions has created a whole new industry. Many applicants are spending hundreds of dollars to pay counselors to “help” them write their entrance essays and to tell them “how” to apply and in which majors. Goodby to good old hard work and merit. Hello to how to beat the system. Unless unbiased criteria are established and the applicants are knowledgeable of those criteria, we have a second California lottery.
