Soviet ships and planes have violated Philippine territory, a Philippine presidential source was quoted as saying. The report appeared in the Malaya and The Manila Chronicle newspapers after published claims that Soviet submarines were sighted six times in the last month off Mindanao, Luzon and Palawan islands. “These things are normal in what you might call the relations between superpowers,” said the unnamed source, reportedly a member of President Corazon Aquino’s staff. The United States maintains air and naval forces at Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base, both on Luzon Island.
