About 48,000 rail workers went on strike, shutting down Canada’s two national railways, after contract talks deadlocked on the issue of job security. “We can’t avert a strike,” chief union negotiator Armand Passaretti said after talks broke off in Montreal. Shortly afterward, the two railways laid off another 10,000 workers. Canadian National Railways and CP Rail move almost 30% of the freight in the country. Transport Minister John Crosbie said the government will review the situation to determine what action to take “to protect the public interest.” The strike also affects Via Rail passenger trains in Montreal and Toronto.
