Opposition and student groups called for the resignation of the South Korean government after the weekend death of a shipyard worker during a demonstration on Koje Island. The National Coalition for a Democratic Constitution, which led protests in June against President Chun Doo Hwan’s government, called for rallies to honor Lee Suk Kyu, who died after reportedly being hit by a tear-gas canister. The opposition alliance demanded that the government resign, saying police actions against Daewoo Shipbuilding and Machinery Ltd. strikers showed “falseness” in the commitment to reform.
