Church of England envoy Terry Waite is alive and being held as a “guest” of his captors in the southern suburbs of West Beirut, an Anglican colleague said. The Rev. Samir Habiby, a Palestinian-born U.S. citizen, who had worked with the Briton on hostage release efforts, said he has kept in touch with others in a humanitarian aid network. “One such person has continued to have direct contact with the captors. . . . That person has assured me that Terry is alive and well, and in reasonably good health.” Habiby’s unidentified contact said that Waite, who disappeared in West Beirut on Jan. 20, was being treated as a guest, albeit “a guest who is unable to return at present.”
