Heavy overnight rains in Europe caused at least seven deaths and washed away a major north-south rail route through the Alps.

The Belgian news agency reported that three elderly people died in the southern town of Charleroi when a river rose six feet in just over 15 minutes and trapped the victims in their basement apartments.

Flooding and landslides claimed three lives in Switzerland and at least one in Italy.

The Gotthard rail tunnel, which links northern and southern Europe through the Alps, was closed for up to a week.

And Paris had its heaviest overnight deluge in more than a century, the national weather bureau said, when nearly four inches of rain fell within a 24-hour period.
