Vietnamese authorities may have discovered the remains of three American servicemen listed as missing in action, a U.S. delegation sent to negotiate aid to the country said today.

Lt. Col. Joe Harvey, head of the delegation, said that during talks this week in Hanoi, Vietnamese officials also provided information about Americans believed captured by North Vietnam during the war.

The United States earlier this month agreed to consider providing aid for disabled Vietnamese war victims in exchange for information on the fate of 1,776 Americans still listed as missing in action in the Vietnam War.

Harvey said the Vietnamese told the delegation that they have the remains of three bodies “which show some evidence of being those of Americans.”

“But they are continuing their investigation concerning these remains and are not prepared to say with certainty that they are American,” Harvey said.

He did not say where the remains were found or how they were discovered.
