CHAPLIN WATCH
I can’t believe that you Southland film colony types can’t get your facts straight (I’m referring to the letter in Saturday Letters, Aug. 8, and, by extension, the Jack Mathews and Robert Falce pieces that prompted it).
In 1928 Charles Chaplin was given a special award--not an Oscar--for “his versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing ‘The Circus.’ ” The award was in the form of a statuette.
In 1972 Chaplin was given a special Oscar “for the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century.”
