Irvine : UCI Fills New Post for Affirmative Action
Manuel Gomez, director of UC Irvine’s Educational Opportunity Program, has been named to the newly created position of assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and student affirmative action, the university announced.
A member of the UCI faculty for the last 14 years, Gomez became head of the university’s Educational Opportunity Program in 1975.
In his new position, Gomez will develop the university’s student affirmative action plan, which seeks to help minority students enter UCI.
Gomez, a resident of Santa Ana, said: “To realize substantive progress and achieve the goal of equity for under-represented groups in higher education presents a profound challenge. I look forward to working with the entire campus community in addressing this concern.”
Gomez designed and implemented UCI’s nationally recognized Project STEP, a program that encourages minority high school students to attend college.
