Shanghai residents say the city got its first visit of an unidentified flying object but military officials who tried to track the mysterious spinning “plate” revealed no details of their findings, the New China News Agency said Friday.

Several witnesses claimed they saw a UFO passing over the city for about 40 minutes Thursday evening, the agency said.

“It was like an oval plate and sometimes a comet with a tail like an umbrella,” the news agency quoted one onlooker as saying.

Another witness said the object looked like a flying orange but he saw it for only a few seconds before it spun clockwise and flew eastward, the agency said.

A People’s Liberation Army officer revealed that military aircraft took off to trace and observe the object, but he said no further information was available.

Officials at a Shanghai meteorological station also reported sighting the UFO.

“It was the first time for a UFO to visit the city,” one meteorologist told the news agency.
