The first test-firing of Morton Thiokol Inc.’s redesigned shuttle booster rocket was set for today after a successful “dry run countdown” in Brigham City, Utah. The test was aborted three times before being postponed because of problems with the cooling system and a computer. The redesigned fuel segment joints were not involved. Today’s two-minute test must be successful to allow the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to continue working toward a June 2 shuttle launch, the first since the Challenger explosion.
