Kansas City Southern Industries Inc. said it is in preliminary negotiations to acquire the Southern Pacific Railway unit of Chicago-based Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp. Kansas City Southern already had publicly expressed interest in buying the Southern Pacific unit. But the talks mark the first time that the holding company has agreed to negotiate on selling the unit.
